Hartman clutch for a Mac 93

Post by Terry Armstrong » Tue Apr 14, 2009 12:54 pm

A friend of mine has a Mac 91 in rough shape, but it has a decent Hartman Inboard clutch.
He recently bought a Mac 93 in good shape and wants to use the Hartman clutch on it.

Now the strange part: The Mac 91 has a tapered shaft with a Woodruff key, the Mac 93 only has a tapered shaft and NO key! :o

Will the clutch work on the Mac 93 without a key????

Appreciate any input.

Terry

The clutch can be used with the left hand crank merely by using a left hand nut to retain it. If you are going to nut start the clutch, you should use a left hand center nut and a right hand nut that screws into the hub. Either way you should lap the hub to the crankshaft before installing it. Personally, I loctite the hub to the crank with red loctite. That is not what most people do, but it seems to help me retain that style of clutch. I can not stress strong enough that the hub must be lapped carefully to the crank. The taper will retain the clutch.
