Throttle rod set up?

Post by Scott Hanisch » Tue Jul 03, 2012 11:55 am

Hi there.

I am in the process of fixing up a what I believe is a1962 Rupp A-bone and I am having trouble setting up the throttle rod on the right side of the kart! I purchased the azusa throttle rod kit pn#AZ2280 and I dont know how to set it up? I was wondering if any one could post pics of their particular set up that would be great!

If you get some pictures, I'd like to see them too. I have a 61 Dart Road Runner that has mounts for twin engines and when I got it (in 1967) there was a 1" wide u shaped sheet metal clamp that anchored the throttle cable conduit at the throttle pedal rod. I used the clamp and the conduit was prone to slipping in it. I put a slot in the band clamp and pushed a washer into the slot so that the hole in it lines up with the core wire. The core wire keeps the washer in place and the conduit has a solid wall to bottom out against. Anchoring the core wire to the throttle pedal rod was another, not so simple or obvious, task (at least for me  ). I ended up putting a cotter pin through the cross drilled hole in the throttle rod and running the cable through the head of the cotter pin. I've seen a lot of nifty ways to anchor throttle cables at VKA events but most of them look like a "new" solution. I have yet to see how a single or twin set of throttle cables was hooked up "back in the day".

Since there were some karts in the day with proper rod-to-rear, then cable to carb, I do not hesitate to use this setup. I lost two A Super races in the 1962 Brevard Co. champ series in Florida. One was due to seizing an engine, one was due to breaking a throttle shaft due to a rod linkage. Never again. TJ

Scott, I have all the original throttle hookups if you are interested in them.

Thanks to everyone for all the help. Got it all figured out now! Now I just need to get rid of the (dare I say it) honda gx200 and install a vintage aircooled 2 smoke engine!
