Fuel Tank Rust
I got a really nice Dart GP last summer. The insides of the steel tanks are a little rusty not to bad but in need of removal. I can't dig up the previous posts on this topic so I just ask again. I've been looking at the Eastwood website and it looks like the POR 15 repair kit is just the ticket. Does anyone have experience with it or any other treatment. The last thing I want to do is ruin the tanks with with a botched muratic acid adventure.

Re: Fuel Tank Rust
Hi, Virg. Pop's rust removal trick for 50 years was a handful of small nuts, and a couple cups of gas or mineral spirits in the tank, cap replaced and shaken well for five minutes or so. Put a 1/8-27 pipe plug in the outlet. Sometimes you have to repeat the treatment a couple of times. It'll loosen and remove any rust particles large enough to cause cloggage of your outlet screen. If you do this enough, you may be able to skip the POR-15. Good luck! Ted

Virg I restore vintage dirt bikes and have to clean tanks all the time. The best I have found to clean rust is Evapo Rust. Just google The Rust Store and they have about the best prices. I have used the POR, but I try to avoid any sealer I can with the alcohol based gas being the norm. I hope this helps. If you need any other information jus PM me.

Re: Fuel Tank Rust
The fermentation (sp) process removes the rust . I am doing some cranks right now . Look it up on the net .

Sterling,
Molasses??? Exactly what I thought but it is an old time and interesting method. Search "molasses" on the vintage kart site, lots of discussion and links on that thread .Pretty interesting.

I have been involved in karting since 1958 and vintage karting since 2008. The best rust removal tool I have ever come across is Evapo Rust. 24 hours in a 1960 AZUSA tank and it was cleaner than new. Great Stuff!
