dan ,,the kart and your whole situation sounds like its going in right direction for sure ..im so glad to here your son wants period correct ride ..any old go kart with a pair of 580 five ports will run pretty dang good .!! like i say but it together ride it tinker on it as you go ..all the while you learn But if someone builds you killer motor and you are not that knowledgeable about it what have you learned .. nothin other than you have a pile of money in a motor you cant make run right ..most every person on here has monkeyd with these things 30 ,40 yrs so it comes nature to most ..get it running good with one motor take the chain off and tune the other motor atleast it will be close .. remember your messing with somethin 45 or more yrs old they dont run as good as a 2011 corvette ..you have to kinda tune them every ride ..but you two will learn and you and your son will enjoy the heck outa it ..

Dan, it looks like the best thing for you to do at first is to put the engine together as is, and on gasoline. If the old port job is so bad that the engine won't run, there are stock blocks out there to be had. I think you ought to stay away from alcohol until you are so familiar with the kart and engine that you could rebuild it in your sleep. If the second engine mount is solid, you can always add another engine at any time. I just don't believe it'd be in your best interest to build a temperamental machine right out of the box. As has been said, the Simplex isn't the lightest or best handling kart, but it will still be a ball to drive. You can always go further as you learn.

Dottie and I both really ejony running our stub axle Simplex .
When the time comes put the second engine on . You will have a blast , both of you .
Look around for a 5 port block , it may take a bit but that is half the fun is the hunt for just the right part .
Look at our website there are lots of pix of our Simplex .

Re: WB 580 5PORT ON ALCOHOL?
ROB ,
THIS KART IS IN THE MIDDLE OF RESTORATION. WE HAVE NEVER EVEN SEEN THIS KART RUN . SO WE CAN NOT EVEN MESS WITH THE TIMING. I WOULD HATE TO BUILD THE PORTED BLOCK AND FIND OUT IT DOES NOT RUN RIGHT. I AM TRING TO FIGURE OUT WHICH WAY TO BUILD THE ENGINES OR CAN I SWITCH TO ALCOHOL LATER WITH OUT CHANGING THE COMPRESSION RATIO. I KNOW THAT I WILL HAVE TO CHANGE THE CARB TO RUN ALCOHOL IF WE GO THAT ROUTE ANB MAYBE TIMING.
THE WB'S CAME WITH LIGHTING BOLT EXHAUST AND VEE REED INTAKES. I WAS PLANING TO CHANGE THE SPROCKET TO A 72T. THE SPROCKETS NEED REPLACING ANY WAY BUT IT IS JUST NOT THAT EASY. I HAVE TO HAVE THE OLD ONES MACHINED OFF AND NEW ONES WELDED ON BECAUSE IT IS PART OF THE BRAKE DRUM.
WE CAN NOT WAIT TO GET THE KART ALL TOGETHER AND HAVE SOME FUN. I KNOW THAT I WILL NOT HAVE IT DONE THIS YEAR BUT I HOPE I CAN BE READY FOR THE 2012 SEASON.
THANKS EVERYONE FOR YOUR INPUT.

ONE MORE THING I KNOW THAT THE 5 PORTS ARE RATED AT 6.5 HP @ 7000 RPM. IS THIS A REAL NUMBER OR CAN I EXPECT MORE OR LESS WHEN DONE RIGHT?
I AM A DRAG RACER AT HEART BUT I THINK MY SON AND I WILL HAVE A BLAST DOING THIS TOGETHER!
