Re: new Vintage Speed tires ....
so far awesome news.
as rob said if the sidewalls are good i'll be happy too.
i read the review on VKA very encouraging.
i applaude Gus for doing this tedious and long process.
with guys like him the soft parts shortage may eventually get solved.
if vintage karting has a future it'll be because these parts are available at a reasonable cost.

Re: new Vintage Speed tires ....
Avon,
Only the tires specified on rear engine karts, no modern profile tires.
Soft tires on sidewinders....No
65 Durometer minimum at 70degrees. Will have a gauge there to check.
We encourage period tires for the Avon track because of it's surface texture and tight turns but will allow modern profiles on sidewinders if the tread width is 42" minimum measured from the center of the tires. We are going to try this this year and see how it goes.
One other add which deviates from many VKA events, if you have modern tires on your rear engine kart, you can't run with the sidewinders or the rears.
We really want this to be a safe event...zero incidents is our goal.

Re: new Vintage Speed tires ....
I thought I was clear, I am sure you know what we mean by rear engine karts.
The tire rules on the Avon flier are very clear, please read them again and if you need further clarification, contact me directly or we can talk about it at Barnesville.

Re: new Vintage Speed tires ....
Wasn't Vintage Karting suppose to NOT have all these Rules?
Of course, if there was no "Racing" we would not be having this conversation
Personally I like Square edge tires on Rear engine karts and I support Rob and Bob for their taking a stand at their Event.
As Far as Sidewinders, run what ever.
And let's be real...
A Durometer Reading is basically a joke and anyone who's been around Karting realizes this.
When we were testing for Carlisle Tire Co., the engineers explained what the compounds did and how they effected the Durometer of the tires.
There are chemicals that are combines in the rubber compound that will soften the rubber as the tires get hot.
So, a tire can have a Durometer reading of 70 at 70 degres and drop down to a 50 Durometer reading at 80 degress.
So what good is the Durometer???
Or how about we all start soaking, applying, filling our tires with caustic chemicals (like the oval racers are doing) to get the compound soft???
Guy, Do we really want to open Pandora's box again??
If your event or track feels you need a Promotors Option Tire Rule.
Make it and post, and let the racers desides whether they want to participate or not.
At Barberton, we have no Tire, Class, Fuel, etc rules and we have great Reviews.
Good Luck in 2011.......
See ya at some of the races..
Rick

Re: new Vintage Speed tires ....
Hey Rick,
Thanks for your input. You are entirely correct about the durometer. Manufacturers do publish durometer guidelines, we are just asking that they be followed.
There is no promotors option class at Avon and almost no "racing" but we have done exactly what you suggested with all the classes, we carefully did the vintage tire rules for Avon and they are posted both on the GVKC site as well as in the fliers on the VKA and TBO websites. That is why I don't understand why this thread even got going. There should be no questions on what to bring and they are reasonable. We will stand by our tire rules.
Anyway, Steve, I will bring a set of narrow 4" fronts to the Mall Saturday(I think they are Carlisles) They are really hard though, they were NOS and I ended up taking them off my Dart because they thing pushed too much. I have Cheng's on there now and it handles like a dream.
See you Saturday,
Scott
